2003 Ford Taurus. Small amount of smoke coming from under the hood. Raised hood and noticed small amount of antifreeze had come out by the reservoir cap. Couldn't find any wet spots under the car. All hoses look to be intact. The other odd thing was that t Vehicle has 280,000 miles on it but motor has 40,000.

Sorry, looks like most of my question was omitted. I will try again.
03 Taurus 280.000 miles on car, motor has 40,000. Sons car. Small amount of smoke coming from underneath the hood. Raised hood and noticed a small amount of antifreeze has leaked from around the resevoir cap. Cap was on tight. No antifreeze on ground below in driveway. Son said temp gauge was normal. Hoses looked to be intact. However, temp gauge stayed at midway between hot and cold even with car turned off. Remained that way for about 8 hours. Finally the gauge went back to cold. What would cause the gauge to stick and antifreeze to leak out of the resevoir cap?

ALL-RIGHTY THEN

THE BIGGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT THING IS IS THE CAR OPERATING IN THE NORMAL TEMPERATURE RANGE? (NOT ACTUALLY OVERHEATING)

IS THE RADIATOR FULL OF COOLANT?

IS/ HAS THE LEVEL BEEN GOING DOWN IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME?

AS FOR THE "SPILLED" RADIATOR JUICE----IN MY JEEPS, IF I FILL THEM TO THE MAX, THEN DRIVE THEM UNTIL AT OPERATING TEMP. "THERMAL EXPANSION" (WATER GETS "BIGGER" WHEN IT'S HOT) PUSHES THE EXCESS WATER BY MY PRESSURE RADIATOR CAP. AND SINCE NEITHER ONE HAS A CATCH BOTTLE THE "EXTRA WATER" GOES ON THE GROUND.

AFTER IT COOLS AND I TAKE OFF THE RADIATOR CAP AND LOOK INSIDE, MY RADIATOR IS NO LONGER "FULL" TO THE TOP, IT SITS ABOUT AN INCH OR INCH AND A HALF LOWER THAN THE TOP

THIS LEVEL FOR MY JEEPS IS THE "NORMAL" LEVEL, IT WILL NOT PUSH ANYMORE OUT, AND WILL REMAIN THERE SORTA "FOREVER" TILL I ADD A BIT AT A LATER DATE, JUST TO INSURE IT AIN'T DOWN, EVEN BY A LITTLE

THERE ARE OTHER POSSIBILITIES LIKE A HEAD GASKET LEAK CAN CAUSE RADIATOR JUICE TO BACK UP. LET'S NOT GO THERE YET!. UNLESS YOU HAVE UN-NORMAL WATER LEVELS, YOU'RE SEEING IT BUBBLING OUT, OR MAYBE ENGINE ACTS ABNORMAL OR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON

YOUR OVERFLOW BOTTLES LID MOST LIKELY HAS A VENT/ OR RELIEF INCORPORATED IN IT, THAT'S HOW IT COULD HAVE GOT PAST A TIGHT CAP

I WOULD HAVE SUGGESTED THE TEMP SENDER FOR YOU GAUGE MAY BE BAD---HOWEVER YOU MENTIONED THE "GAUGE" ITSELF DOES NOT MOVE TO "COLD" WHEN THE CAR IS 100% OFFI SUSPECT THE GAUGE IS DEFECTIVE (DOES "THUMPING" OVER THE TOP OF IT MAKE IT DROP ON DOWN? (LIKE YOU SEE 'EM DO IN THEM SUBMARINE MOVIES!)

ANY BETTER UPDATES---SYMPTOMS?

YOUR TURN

THE MEDIC

MY OVERFLOW TUBE DROPS DOWN IN FRONT OF MY TRAIN HORN ON "MR. JEEP", SPILLS ON TO THE GROUND. THIS IS MY '77 CJ 5, LATER YEARS HAVE THE BOTTLE"WILLY" MY '46 WILLYS HAS THE SAME SET UP, MY YOUNGIN 'BOUT TO TAKE HIM FOR A DRIVE WHEN SHE WAS 10 YRS OLD (HOOD NUMBERS ARE HER BIRTHDAY)

Thanks Medic, I will dig into it this evening to see what I can find. The water level sits at about an inch below the top in the over flow bottle. Haven't had a chance to check the radiator levels. Not sure if its running hot.(Kids Car). He says the temp gauge is in the middle. Engine runs normal with no check engine light on. Thanks for your help.

AFTER A GOOD DRIVE, JUST TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER, YOU CAN "SHOOT" YOUR RADIATOR (TOP, MIDDLE, AND BOTTOM) WITH INFRARED THERMOMETER (GUN)

AT THE TOP SHOULD BE ABOUT THE TEMP RATING OF YOUR THERMOSTAT, IT SHOULD PROGRESSIVELY GET COOLER TOWARDS THE BOTTOM, BEFORE IT RE-ENTERS THE ENGINE (IT WILL NOT BE COLD!!!)

IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO WORKS IN A RESTAURANT, THEY USE 'EM TO CHECK FOOD TEMPS (EZer/ FASTER THAN THE PROBE TYPE)YOU MIGHT WORK IT OUT TO PULL AROUND BACK AND DO A FAST CHECK---MAYBE YOU KNOW SOMEONE WITH ONE....THESE GUNS CAN BE FOUND FOR $30 ON UP TO HUNDREDS OF $$$s, IF YOU PURCHASE ONE

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/OEM-Non-Contact-infrared-thermometer/_/N-26lq?itemIdentifier=951642_0_0_

BUT OUT OF ALL OF YOUR GAUGES, THE OIL PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE "NEED" TO WORK.....THESE 2 ARE THE ONES THAT WILL SAVE YOUR ENGINE, IF YOU ALWAYS MONITOR THEM AND SHUT IT DOWN BEFORE A DISASTER BREWS.........SO GET YOURS REPAIRED!

DIY MIGHT BE AN OPTION TOO--FOR THIS AND OTHER REPAIRS

Thanks again Medic, I did some investigating last night with a friend. He plugged in his tester to monitor the temp. It stayed between 180 and 190 degrees again with the temp gauge half way between hot and cold. Again after the car was shut off the gauge stayed at that point for some time before dropping back down to cold. On a cold start, it progressivly moves back to the middle range which is normal operating temp. It just sticks for a while after the car is shut off. Maybe gauge is faulty? I will continue to monitor.

Thanks again

IF YOU HAPPEN TO SEE ANOTHER RIG JUST LIKE YOURS IN A PARKING LOT AND THE OWNER IS AROUND, SEE IF THEIRS REACTS THE SAME WAY.

OR FIND A USED CAR LOT AND TEST DRIVE ONE LIKE YOURS!

SORRY I DO NOT MORE ABOUT YOUR CAR

FROM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES WITH OLDER STUFF, "USUALLY" A ELECTRIC GAUGE DROPS TO ZERO WHEN THE KEY IS SWITCHED OFF.

A "MECHANICAL" (MERCURY TYPE) HAS NO ELECTRIC INFLUENCE AT ALL, 'CEPT FOR IT'S LIGHT (IT READS THE TEMP WHATEVER IT IS ALL OF THE TIME (LIKE YOURS SEEMS TO BE DOING OW)---I CAN ONLY ASSUME YOURS IS FACTORY ELECTRIC, SOMEONE HAS NOT DONE MODIFICATIONS TO IT

THESE WERE USED IN EARLY VEHICLES, WHEN ELECTRIC STUFF CAME OUT, THEY BECAME AN AFTERMARKET ITEM.I HAVE THEM IN BOTH OF MY JEEPS, MY '77 CJ 5 STILL HAS THE FACTORY "C" & "H" ( NO #s) IN THE LOWER LEFT PORTION OF THE SPEEDOMETER--THE MECHANICAL TEMP GAUGE IS NOW A SEPARATE GAUGE BOTTOM LEFT IN THE GROUP OF FOUR, RIGHT OF THE SPEEDO.I REALLY LIKE GAUGES! I WANNA ADD MORE!

JUST WHENEVER, UPDATE ME ON YOUR FINDINGS, AT THIS SAME POST. NO RUSH
