Often this is a faulty ignition lead, with the engine under load the spark must bridge the electrode under an enormous pressure, if the lead is faulty and voltage can leak out it will under such conditions, voltage will always seek the path of less resistance, I would start with replacing the leads.

By leads do you mean spark plug wires?

Yes, high tension leads, that is what they are called here in Aust.
