Most likely binding upper strut mounts. Hold your fingertips lightly on the coil springs right inside and over the front tires, then have a helper slowly turn the steering wheel. You should feel the spring turn freely along with the tire. If it feels like it is winding up then suddenly snapping free, the bearing in the upper mount is binding. That in itself is not a safety hazard but it can cause "memory steer". That's where the steering wheel stays wherever you put it rather than returning to center. That can make the car miserable to drive.
