I have a 03 Ford Taurus. Problem starting couple weeks ago after driving the car through a considerable amount of slush on the roadways. Car was fine at first, but later in the day after driving through a large puddle, the battery light came on.

I'd suspect worn brushes in the generator. Use an inexpensive digital voltmeter to measure battery voltage with the engine running when the light is staying on. It must be between 13.75 and 14.75 volts. If it's down to around 12.6 volts, the generator isn't working.
