knocking/clicking sound under the hood

I have a 2003 ford ranger with a 2.3L engine in it 4 cylinder. It started to make a clicking/knocking noise. It would only make that noise when I would accelerate. The faster I went the louder and faster the noise got. Now the truck is making that noise even when its just sitting there on neutral. what can it be?

it might be a cam follower doing this. have a pro listen to it to give you a better opinion as we can't hear the noise.
