I have a 2003 Ford Ranger with about 103K miles on it. I've noticed a drop in fuel mileage, and am preparing for a trip this summer. I'm already planning to replace the spark plugs, air and fuel filters, PCV, and run some injector cleaner through the fuel system.
My friend told me that he had his truck's air intake system serviced. He said that the mechanic sprayed something into the air intake then ran the engine with the RPMs up and black smoke came out the exhaust. Afterwards his truck ran more smoothly and with better fuel economy. It seems that I should be able to easily do this myself. However, I have been searching online and cannot find any information on how to clean the air intake system or what agent is sprayed into the system. Thanks for your help!

He probably used throttle body cleaner. You spray it in the air intake. Found the best way to do it is spray it in the air intake with the engine off. Wait a few minutes then start the truck. Repeat a couple of times. Reason sometimes just a little dird or carbon can get in the air intake jets and clog up. I try to do my cars about twice a year.

Thanks M.H. I thought about doing that, then I found out that Sea Foam makes a product specifically for this application. It's called SS-14 Intake Cleaner, runs just under $12 at my local auto parts store. I'm currently out of town, but plan to use this as soon as I get home.
Thanks for your help, and have a great day!

There are a number of products out there that will do the same thing. It is just what one you want to use. When you do it get the air intake sensor.
