2003 Ford Other Defrost and popping noise

When I turn on the defrost in my 2003 Ford Ranger it starts making a popping noise and the engine starts running rough at idle. There is no leaking of radiator fluid and it does put out hot air.

scan for codes and check belt for jumping around when it does this.
