2003 Ford Focus Try Turn Ignition Key Will Locked Manually Move Gear Shifter

when i try and turn my ignition the key will not turn (its not locked) i have to manually move the gear shifter back and forth and then sometimes the key will then turn. it will work fine for a few days and then it will lock up again. need a little help

have the cable adjustment checked for the shifter. it sounds more like a key cylinder issue than the shifter
