I had a similar issue with the wife's escape, also 2003, but a 3.0
It would Stud-d-d-d-der for a second or so, when climbing a slight hill or more.
The 1st thing I did was replace the plugs--it helped some, maybe 30%
They told me several things to look for
One being a vacuum leak
The other was EGR
I removed and cleaned the EGR the best I could, I even used vacuum from my Jeep CJ 5 to actuate it while trying to clean it
It did improve, but the EGR Piston and Seat, were nearly impossible to access for a proper cleaning
I could suck air by the piston, using my mouth, via the hole to the exhaust. Was not much, but it was not 100% sealing off.
I replaced it a few days later, with a new one
That was the ticket!
Let me know if this helped.I did take some pics!--Remember, This is an ESCAPE 2003--3.0
