Whinning noise

When I mash the accelerator going down the road I hear a whinning noise. It quits when I let up on the accelerator. What could cause that

I need to narrow this down a bit. If you're doing high speeds, but not on the accelerator, does the car make the noise still, or does it go away? If you're going under 10 mph, do you hear the noise, and does it get louder with speed? If the car is in park, does it make the noise when you hit the accelerator?
