Here is a bit of background info before the actual question.

I own a 2003 Ford Explorer. 4-6 months ago had both rear wheel barring a replaced. Yesterday I heard a grinding and rattling coming from the front diver side wheel area. Our normal mechanic was on vacation so had to take it to someone new. He replaced the frond riverside wheel barring and stated that the front differential also needed to be rebuilt/replaced.

Personally I think he overcharged on the wheel barring ($490 & if it actually even needed to be replaced bc the rattle noise is still there)

The question is, 1- What should the cost of the front differential be, 2- Is the car safe to drive in the mean time (3 kids ages 7 years -2 months.

Thank you!

It wasn't until way at the end that you said the problem is a rattle. That is not a wheel bearing issue. That is a loose or worn part in the steering or suspension systems. Ford has much more trouble with those parts than other manufacturers, and while some simply cause annoying noises, some are definitely safety-related. A separated ball joint or tie rod end can send you into the ditch or oncoming traffic. The vehicle should be inspected at least once per year at a tire and alignment shop and whenever you hear a rattle or other noise. The people there will be able to show you why a part is rattling.

We don't get involved with costs here because there's way too many variables and things we don't know. Without knowing how the diagnosis was done, or the results, I'm inclined to suggest this is not a differential problem either.
