If something is broken off in the steering box and you can't get it out, then you are looking at replacing the steering box.

The end recesses into and fits flat. It is the recesses part that I can't get out.

I don't have a picture of what you are referring to but the same answer applies. If it won't come out, you have to replace the box.

Went to the Ford dealership for advice and they use an extractor when this happens. So I will give that a try.

When you said you couldn't get it out, I took that as everything has already been tried.
Depending what the reason was that it broke off in the first place, the extractor has less strength than the original fitting so you may just make it worse.
