oil pressure

I have a 2003 dodge 1500. The oil pressure gauge goes from the middle all the way to low and the check gauges light comes on. What causes that?

low oil will for one,check to see if you have any oil in the engine.maybe a bad oil filter will as well. if it still does it then put amechanical gauge on it and see if it drops. if it doesn't then you may have a bad sending unit.
