the car will start and run, but will cut off when put in drive or reverse

The first thing to do would be to get the trouble codes pulled. I realize it does not run so this may not be possible. You should probably test the fuel pressure and make sure it is meeting specified PSI.
Advance Auto and Auto Zone parts stores loan out test gauges with a deposit. There is a test port on the fuel rail and the gauge will come with adapters to attach it to the rail.
The other part that could be at fault is the Idle Air control Valve. IACV. It changes the idle RPM dependent on engine load. It is located on the intake near the throttle body. it will have an elctricla connector and have coolant lines running though it in some cases. It may need to be cleaned or replaced.
