I have a 2003 dodge neon My check engine light came on while driving and my car was having a hard time reaching above 2000rpm's. Once parked I shut my car off and let it rest. I then I tried to receive a on board diagnostic reading. I turned the ignition ON-OFF-ON-OFF and ON (but not to start) I then looked for the check engine light to blink but my car made a few noise as if you door was open But it was more than that. It dinged 5 times paused and then dung once more leading me to believe that it was the diagnostics reading code is 51. I have never experienced a code in a dinging form but the check engine light didn't flash. It it common for cars to give diagnostics codes like this, and is it safe to assume that this is my code?

Sounds more like the battery is run down. The codes are four-digit codes since 1996 models so they display in the odometer instead of the Check Engine light. Have you been able to restart the engine?
