can you bypass the air conditioning compressor in a 2003 dodge durango, thus not to interupt the proformance of the engine. It is making a clicking noise, i saw fresh metal shavings around pully. Worried it may completely cease up and thus cease the engine. It's winter here in PA, dont need the a/c right now and my mechanic estimate is $900 to replace it and charge the system. It is 2 weeks before xmas, that price tag is a little steep for this time of the year.

The only thing you can do is check with a parts store and see if they have a bypass pully. If they do, you need to remove the compressor and install the pulley in its place.

As far as the compressor, it if locks up, it will burn up the belt. If that happens, you should hear is squealing, see smoke from the belt, and eventually when it breaks, you will loose power steering, the alt won't charge, it will overheat...

I live in PA too. If you have other questions, let me know.
