If you trade it at a used car dealer's lot, they expect problems like this. You won't get any more for the car if you spend the money to have it diagnosed and fixed, and you very likely won't get any less if you do the courteous thing and tell them about the problem so they don't unknowingly pass it on to the next buyer.
