When I try to start my car it will not turn over. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key half way but I was told it could still be the problem, I checked the oil and it was dry so I put about 2 qts in and tried again but still nothing. Eventually after trying a few times the battery seemed to fade out. Im not very familiar with car jargon so I would appreciate a dumbed down answer if possible, thanks for your help.

Is the starter engaging and cranking the engine?

Okay, if it is cranking, the starter is working. Now you need to check for spark and fuel to the engine. The easiest way to do this is to use starting fluid and see if it will start for a couple seconds. Do that and let me know what you find.
