What does "check guages" lite mean when it comes on and flickers?

My 2003 Astro just had the "check guages" lite come on and is now flickering. What is this lite for? Is it a serious problem?

It means look at the gauges to see which one is indicating a problem. The seriousness depends on what's wrong. The most common thing on a GM vehicle would be the charging system. That will cause the voltage gauge to read lower than normal. There could also be an overheating problem or the oil pressure could be low.
