CV axle removal?

remove the axle nut thats on the outside center of the wheel. then remove the bolt retaining the lower ball joint. use a ball joint fork to separate. pry down the control arm to separate then remove the outer axle from hub by pulling the strut out and removing the axle from the rear of the hub.u may need a brass hammer and pry bar . to release the inner joint at the trans.then the axle can be removed. i recommend replacing the hole axle. Don't jump off the bridge here. Astro's have a history of eating idler arms. It is rare for them to need Transaxle shafts (CV joints term is old technology). Besides, the front CV joints were just going along for the ride 99% of the time anyway.

I could be wrong here, but again, someone writes in about a procedure without a description of the problems or the associated symptoms.

I doubt that you need transaxle shafts. Jack the front end up off the ground on both sides and have someone rock a front wheel back and forth while you watch underneath and see what is moving that should not.

New man on the post!! This seems to be a great site for all things automotive. Hope someone can help me out. I recently bought a 1991 astro awd with 208k miles. It's been kept up fairly well. Anyway my question involves the drive train. I replaced one front cv axle as the boot was torn. The issue is when I turn sharply left or right, going forward or backing up, the wheels seem to want to bind up, stop moving etc. The mechanic that replaced the axle called a dealer and they said this was normal with this year astro. It doesn't seem right that a truck would be made to do this as normal. Thought it might be u-joints or the transfer case Other than that the truck runs pretty smoothe. Thanks for any help.
p.s I'm willing to make a contribution for really usefull info, it's only fair and a great idea to contribute in this way. I'll be better able to do that later this week.

i have the same problem on mine....this is the 3rd 91 i've owned and have never had this problem before...so if anybody knows whats up could you please help us

I finally removed the front drive shaft and all the symptoms went away. Seems the t-case is the likely culprit. You can drive without the front d-shaft with no harm to the front diff or transmission. I plan on replacing my t-case with a manual 2 speed in the future so I most likely won't repair the current bw4427. The s-10's have most of the parts needed and then you can have 4wd on demand. The new t-case will be the np231c.
