fuel gauge problems

I have a 2003 Cadillac srx thats gas needle has stopped working. In the past couple of weeks it has cut off a few times, what is wrong?

The gas gauge is probably a bad sending unit in the tank but that would have to be tested. You're not going to know what made it cut out unless some testing can be done during the failure.
