The mechanic told me I had to have an interstate battery that costs 170.00 because it had to be vented . Is this true? Why ?

no, i disagree.
i use standard batterys that are about 95-100 and they work just fine. there are other brands beside interstate.

The mechanic is partially right. You need a vented battery because it's under the backseat in the passenger compartment. There is a vent tube that routes the battery (hydrogen) gas outside.
If you put a standard battery in, the battery gasses will cause corrosion under the seat and a spark could cause an explosion.
