2003 Bmw 118d Car Started Temp Gauge Straight Hot Red Light On S Overheating

When the car is started the temp gauge goes straight to hot but no red light on. So it's not overheating. Also car struggling to start when it's warm. It was perfect last night no problems. Could this be some sort of sensor.

Or the wiring harness to the suspect sensor
