how do you no when your timing belt and fuel pump go bad

the day before my car was runnin fine the next day i got two blocks for my house it made a funny noise over heated and shut off and now it sounds like it want to start but its not

engine may have gotten damaged by overheat. no start from loss of compression due to head gasket failure. a mechanic will have to check it out.
