The plastic water pump impeller is broken. This causes coolant
to no longer circulate in the engine & heater core.
That is why you do not get any heat inside the car, until the coolant
gets too hot.
A simple check for water pump operation, is to remove the small
hose that is attached to the coolant reservoir tank and then start
the engine.
With the engine rpms at 2000, coolant should come out of that
hose at a steady pace/stream.
If no coolant comes out, then the water pump is not pumping/pushing
coolant.
To replace the water pump, the timing belt needs to be removed, so
I would suggest a timing belt & tensioner service at the same time.
