if your car engine is switched off does putting the car in gear without using the clutch still damage your car?

If you are not moving, no there is no problem there, if the car is in motion you should not attempt to select any gear with out the clutch being used.

actually it is possible to shift while driving even without using clutch if synchronizers are good. you accelerate and then pause. immediately at start of pause change gears fairly rapidly. a little practice and you may wonder why you use clutch at all? this practice of course is only recommended in clutch related emergencies.

Speed matching and short shifting should only be attempted only when no clutch is available, i would not recommend that you give this a try as if you force things you will do damage to the gear box.
