While driving, a yellow symbol next to my gas meter popped up saying "check" below it. What does it mean?

That is the Check Engine Light (CEL), also known as Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) and it means an error has been detected in the engine control system and has been recorded in the engine computer (PCM). A scan is required to retrieve the trouble code to understand which component or its circuit has malfinctioned.

Autozone and most parts outlet provides free scanning services.

Post the trouble code here and we shall see what needs to be done.
