when in reverse, backing up an incline I get a jerking or slipping action. Is that a major repair?

Probably is a slipping band or clutch pack, get the system checked out by a qualified trans tech, they should be doing a line pressure check as well, just to see if internal hydraulic pressures are ok, start here.
