I have a 2002 Avalon XLS. It is stuck in Park, I can press the button that releases it and lets me put it in another gear. How do I fix this?

When I step on the brake it does not make the usual sound that releases the shifter. The lights do not illuminate any longer for the gears, the emergency brake light is no longer illuminated on the dash board (ever) and the sunroof will not open. I drove home, put it in Park then went to leave a few hours later and it wouldn't budge.

check the fuse for the brake lights as it is the primary for operating the shifter interlock and brake lights.
