How do I know that both cams are in correct revolution with crank on 2002 subaru forester "L" SOHC 2.5L Timing belt broke on the old lady going about 55mph and now I have to guess if each is still in proper rotation?

That alignment marks aren't really your big problem here. This is an interference engine and chances are nearly 100% that the engine has a bunch of bent valves now.
