2002 Saturn Sl1 Service Engine Soon Light Stays On Time Get Cruising Speed

The "service engine soon" light stays on all the time. When I get to cruising speed at whatever the speed limit is, it feels like the car surges a little. It also feels like it's having trouble figuring out which gear to stay in. Sometimes it also wants to idle faster than it should. It also has a hard slam into reverse. Any I ideas are greatly appreciated. I don't have a small fortune to fix it.

There's a diagnostic fault code stored in the Engine Computer. Many auto parts stores will read them for you for free. That will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis.
