knocking noise from behind the dash

On starting there is a knocking noise from behind the dash that goes on for around 5 seconds. If I put the aircon setting to internal flow, the noise. On changing the aircon setting from external to internal flow the noise is significantly reduced. A garage suggested that the dashboard would have to come out - I am looking to sell the car soon and do not really want to incur any major expense at this time. Do you have any suggestions? Investigate the air blend door/actuator if its operating correctly.
