Overheating

PONTIAC 2002 SUNFIRE OVERHEATING, NO COOLANT in the resivor. AND THE RADIATOR CAP WAS HALF OFF when the car overheated

The radiator cap being loose or off, could have caused the lose of coolant. Water will boil around 212 degrees at atmospheric pressure. Generic info says for every pound the radiator cap is rated for, it will raise the boiling point of water, 2 degrees. A radiator cap rated at 15 lbs would raise the boiling point 30 degrees higher than 212 or 242 degrees.
