You must remove the torque engine mount and use the car to roll the engine forward which will give you more room to get the alternator out.

What's the trick for Pontiac Montana's Alternator rear bolts? Are the nuts mounted on the block or firewall?

Nothing is attached to the firewall because the engine moves.

Hi,
I'm lost trying to change the alternator in my van and compleatly lost on how to remove it or even where to start

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION 1.Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2.Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley 3.Remove the air cleaner assembly 4.Disconnect the positive lead at the alternator by removing the nut 5.Disconnect the electrical connector (PLIS) plug 6.Remove the bolt (#1) connecting the rear brace to the generator 7.LOOSEN the bolt (#7)retaining the rear brace to the exhaust manifold, (it is not necessary to remove it) move the brace aside. 8.Remove the remaining alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator. 3.1L Engine See Figure 1 Fig. Fig. 1: Alternator mounting-3.1L engine To install: For 3.1L (LG6) engine, where a rear brace is used, bolt installation sequence and tightening sequence are important. Use the diagram as a guide. 1.Position the alternator and install the pivot (long) mounting bolt (#2). Do not tighten 2.Install the other bracket bolt (#4), but do not tighten. 3.Reposition the rear brace and install the bolt (#1) into the rear of the alternator (do not tighten) 4.Tighten bolt #4 to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten the pivot bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). 5.Tighten bolt #7 to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm), making sure brace is properly aligned. Tighten bolt # 1 to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). 6.Assure that tightening brace bolts does not place alternator in a bind. The pulley must spin freely. 7.Reconnect the electrical connector- (PLIS) plug 8.Install the battery positive lead to the output (BAT) terminal on the alternator and tighten the nut. 9.Install the serpentine belt 10.Install the air cleaner 11.Connect the negative battery cable.

HOW DO YOU REMOVE REAR MOUNTING BOLT

I know that on most models you have to remove throttle body inlet duct,fuel inj. cover, trany in neutral, remove engine mount strut bolts,install tilt strap, pivot engine forward and secure,remove drive belt, ect.(pivoting engine may provide acess you need) Its a good investment to get a manual, I have several online editions and they are very discriptive, money well spent, Mine paid for itself when I found a service article about flickering interior and headlights.(I had already spent about 6-8 hrs trying to troubleshoot problem, fact is I would have never found without the service bullitin) It gave the service bullitin # and instructions on how to fix. Most are around $25 online for a year.

I recently replaced the altenator starter and battery I get power but no turn over from the starter no crank the small wire reads 12 volts and everything is properly installled all the fuses are good im in a pickle and ideas tips help would be appreciated thank you.

So small wire to starter solenoid gets 12V when key on start? if yes suspect cable problem maybe bad ground. try connecting a jumper cable from BATT NEG to block

How do I change the alternator on a 2000 Pontiac Montana?

Generator Replacement Removal Procedure Remove the battery ground (negative) cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure . Remove the windshield wiper system module cover. Refer to Wiper Module Cover Replacement in Wipers Washer System. Rotate and secure the engine forward. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L. Remove the generator B+ terminal nut. Remove the generator B+ lead. Remove the generator electrical connector. Remove the drive belt from the generator. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L. Remove the generator from the generator bracket and position the generator above the drive axle. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement . Remove the power steering pipes from the power steering pipe retainer. Remove the fuel pressure test port (schrader valve) cap from the fuel injector rail. Important: Do not disconnect the power steering pipes from the power steering pump. Remove the power steering pump and reposition the power steering pump in front of the timing chain cover in order to provide access for the generator. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System. Remove the generator from the vehicle.
