windshield wipers stuck up

2002 Grand prix 104000 miles. The wind shield wipers work perfectly except when I turn them off. When off, they stick straight up. I took it in and they said the gears where messed up and it would take 400$ to fix. I would like to do it myself. please help.

So the wipers work perfect except the wipers dont park?Thats usually caused by a bad motor.

Yes I would like to know how to replace the motor to save a few bucks. huge fan of the site.
