So my 2002 Pontiac fire bird 3.8l today when I started it to warm it up started just fine after roughly 20 seconds my fans came on I shut the car off checked my coolant every thing was good started the car same thing I let it run for a few mins drove it to wrck about 3 miles and my temp gauge never moved so obviously my coolant temp sensor but I guess my big question is is there a fail safe or something that causes the fans to run constantly when that goes out or could it be something else

Yes if you unplug the coolant temp sensor the fan will come on and run all the time as a fail safe. The first thing you need to is check the coolant temp sensor.
