my engine light came on and they said its my cataylic converter. how soon before it goes out and how expensive is it?

Is it P0420? if so could be the cataytic converter

the diagnostic said somethign about catalyc efficiency or somethign and i said what does that mean and the guy said the catalyic converter is bad. ill have to go back and do another diagnostic and someone else might know more.
