Removed headliner, had to cut wires to overhead lights. wires glued to headliner.

How was I supposed to undo it?

How were you supposed to undo what?Alot of connectors dont have a place to unplug them back from the connector.They usually only offer pig tails that you splice in to repair the connectors.
