car wont crank when i turn key and it wont get spark either

2002 plymouth neon wont crank or wont get spark and i bypassed the ignition and went from battery to starter and the starter works what is causeing this problem.

How do you know it doesn't have spark if it won't crank? Do you hear a single kind of loud clunk from under the hood each time you turn the ignition switch to "crank"?
