I've seen quotes for timing belt replacement between $250-$750, depending on how much labor is involved and the hourly labor rate
Replacing timing belts can take as few as two hours and as many as six hours. I've heard of hourly labor quotes from $40 an hour where there is a low cost of living, to over $110-$150 an hour at BMW and Mercedes dealerships in urban areas. In my area in Kentucky there are ordinary repair shops with rates from $55-$80 an hour, and ordinary dealerships with rates of $80-$90.

I am having trouble getting a picture of the timing marks for a new timing belt. I replaced the belt by putting it back the way it came off but I must have been off a tooth some where. I am an ase cert. Tech and have no problem doing it again but I will not guess again. Can you help?

Hi chicago36,

The timing is ECU controlled, no setting necessary.

Yes you should change your timing belt as well as the waterpump, cam seals, crank seal and timing belt tensioner pulley. All of these components are behind the timing belt and if not changed during the belt change may result in having to return to the timing belt again before the next interval is due.

The engine you have is a 3.3 liter this engine is NOT a interference motor most technicians don't know this. The 3.0 liter engine in earlier Nissan's was a interference engine. This switch was made in 1996 So you can wait a little while if you need to save your money to do it right. Don't get taken by most of these small shops that try to sell you on a cheaper price but end up only doing half the job. DO IT ONCE AND DO IT RIGHT, IT IS CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN.

Does the water pump run off the timing belt on my 2001 Nissan Xterra? Is it an "interference engine". What should I expect to pay for repair if timing belt breaks?
