throttle problem 2002 pathfinder

A friend has a 2002 pathfinder with a manual transmission. When they put it into first gear and and take off. A few seconds the veichle has some sort of surge and it acks like you pushed the clutch in and realeased it again. Not sure where to start looking.

Do you have check engine light on and or flashing
if on 1st step should be getting the codes
need an OBDII reader
most local part store should have it for you to use and get the codes check with your area
once you have the codes let us know
if check engine light on and flashing ,its in need to be checked for tune up as its an indication of a misfire

if check engine light on with engine running ,check fuel filter and check fuel pressure
