Losing engine coolant from the reservoir, (the level will go up and down when the engine heats up and cools down but it should never run empty), a puddle on the ground, coolant running down the front of the engine, (passenger side on front-wheel-drive cars), cold air from the heater when the coolant level gets low enough, and grinding or rumbling noises from the front of the engine.
