Will the ECM sustain damage if I unplug its connector without disconnecting the battery? If so, why? What is immobilizer "lock mode" and how does one get around it? Is it triggered by disconnecting the connector without disconnecting the battery?

Try resetting security system for lock mode if no manual look online. If you disconnect battery it sets it off or if battery is bad. Unplugging ecm without battery disconnect won't hurt it but I don't know why you would anyhow long as engine isn't running.

Shouldn't have been working on the car after sleepless night. Neglected to disconnect the battery. Resetting the security system for lock mode is typically done how? I didn't know I can adjust/revise security settings. I have the FSM but it only says to take it to dealer's Consult 2 analyzer. That is not a friendly solution. Perhaps there is a device that can get around the Nissan
system.
