My fuel gauge has stopped working. How do I troubleshoot the problem to find out what is not working and causing this problem. I have searched online and found that it could be the fuel sender but I dont want to go out and buy one then to find out that this is not the problem.

Locate the fuel sender wire at fuel pump.
Turn ignition switch on and ground the wire momentarily. If the gauge needle moves to maximum, the wiring and gauge are ok, and fault lies with the sending unit or its wiring inside the tank.
