Can I or should I put a car starter in my 2002 158,000 mile auto? Am I asking for trouble?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Did your "Starter" go out? If your engine won't turn over, how did you make sure that it's the starter, and not the battery/wiring/ignition switch?
If you are in fact sure it's your starter, yes you can replace it yourself. Mileage makes no difference, so long as the engine is in good shape.
