rear brake lights

I have a Mercury Mountaineer, 2002, AWD. Rear brake lights come on after car is turned off. Is this a brake light switch problem? Easy, DIY repair?

Sounds like it-inspect and test the switch to rule it out

how do I test the switch? What am I looking for that will let me know, "time to get a new switch?"

Disconnect the brake switch and see what happens-
