2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER V6, When fueling the vehicle, the fuel pump stops at about half fuel, and only by (squeezing) to fill up. I think the vent on the tank has a valve which is stuck closed. Also the check engine lih=ght came on a few days after the problem started. What should I look for first??

unless you have a scanner, smoke machine and a voltmeter, it will be tough. you need these items to test it correctly before throwing any parts at it.
it most likely is the vent solenoid but power and grounds must be confirmed before condemning the part.
