2002 Mercury Cougar car won't start

Earlier yesterday we got in the car we went to some stores, them came home. Later that night we were trying to leave and we got in it and turned the key. All we heard was a single loud click.we called the neighbors over to give us a jump but it didn't work. This morning we left in a diffrent car and got a new battery.we switched them or and tried to crank it but again a single loud click.

2 things try hitting starter body when trying to start if it starts you need a starter. also try resetting your anti theft unit if no manual look online.
