Engine light on & off on 2002 Mazda 626

My check engine light has come on and gone off a few times. How do I know for certain if a catalytic converter is O2 sensor is needed. There is @ $300 difference I've been quoted and I want to be certain I'm not being taken.

That would take a lot more detailed diagnosis to determine that for sure. That particular code is just a slow warm up code and not a catalyst efficiency code so the 0/2 signals would have to be examined closely to be sure. It is possible for them to be the problem. Ask the guy is he is going to guarantee his diagnosis.
