My overdrive light came on and the car will obviously not shift. Is this an electrical problem?

Most likely... have the computer scanned to see if there are any trouble codes related to the transmission.

my mechanic did that, tried to clear the codes but they all came back. He seems to think it is a solenoid issue and needs more time to look into it. I'm asking what your gut feeling is since the problem occured immediately and not over time.

Without knowing the codes that you have, I would guess it is related trans control module (TCM). That is a guess.
